The Adventurous Water Snake Concert

On March 17th, 2013, the Confucius Institute in Québec (CIQ) hosted an intimate concert of traditional and contemporary Chinese and East Asian music and dance. Following opening messages of welcome delivered in Chinese by CIQ Executive Director Meng Rong and in English by Dawson College Academic Dean, Dr. Robert Kavanagh, Concordia Music professor and emcee for the evening, Kevin Austin and Chih-Lin Chou led “Snake Charmer”, a musical and improvisational number. The evening continued with a performance of “Water Lotus, a Tang Poem and “Amazing Grace”, played on violin by a group of students from the Venus Fu studio. Both numbers were performed while Guohua Wang created Chinese art representing the Water Snake, which also formed the number “2013” and included wishes for the New Year.

Cegep Limoilou Press Conference for the Opening of the Confucius Classroom

This past February 22nd , 2013, Cegep Limoilou held a press conference to announce the opening of the new Confucius Institute in Québec (CIQ) classroom. The press conference was hosted by the President of the Board of Governors of the CIQ, M. Richard Filion, Executive Director, Ms. Meng Rong and the Director General of Cegep Limoilou, M. Louise Grou. In an elegant setting, the trio announced that the status of Confucius Classroom had been granted to Cegep Lomoilou and that the first project for the newly inaugurated arm of the CIQ would be to send a number of Québécois students to Chinese Summer Camp. It was also announced during this conference that Québec Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity, Agnès Maltais, has committed some grant to help support the travel of each student who will participate in the camp.

Chinese New Year Celebration – Cegep de Victoriaville

On February 21st, 2013, Confucius Institute in Québec Executive Director, Meng Rong, attended a day of Chinese New Year of the Snake festivities held at Cegep de Victoriaville. The day’s activities were organized jointly by Confucius Institute in Québec teachers and by Cegep de Victoriaville Student Services, led by Mme. Martine Thibodeau, Coordinator of their Modern Languages Department.

Chinese New Year Gala – Place des Arts, Montréal

On February 17th, 2013, the Confucius Institute in Québec, in collaboration with the Phoenix Art Troupe, hosted the annual Chinese New Year Gala in celebration of the Year of the Snake. In attendance was the General Consul of China, Deputy Consul General Ms. Qin Zhanpeng, members of the Québec provincial and Canadian federal government, including former Minister of Justice, Mme Fatima Houda Pepin, Mr. Martin Cauchon, members of the Montréal municipal government Mme Louise Harel, Mme Mary Deros, Mme Fatima Diallo, Mr. Poulin, Mr. Nahib Hussain, Louise Harel, Mr.François Robillard as well as members of the community at large.

Two Confucius Classrooms Have Been Opened

On February 9th, 2013, the Confucius Institute in Québec received approval for the opening of two new Confucius Classrooms, located at Collège Bourget in Rigaud and at Cegep Limoilou in Québec City, Québec. The Confucius Institute in Québec is proud to begin extending Chinese language courses and cultural activities to the regions outside of Montréal through these classrooms and to contribute to the increased understanding and exchange between Canada and China.
